The first ever Mario game was in 1981 called the Donkey Kong. It currently appears in different video game genres such as racing, puzzle, fighting and sports. Mario or also known as the Super Mario is depicted as a short, Italian-American plumber who lives in a mushroom kingdom. Its mission is always to stop the turtle like Bowser's from taking over the mushroom kingdom and kidnapping the princess. He also has other enemy rivals such as the Donkey Kong and Wario.
The first power up item that the Super Mario used to provide him with various powers was the Hammer in Donkey Kong. The Super Mario Bros introduced the basic three power-ups that became the staples for the series; especially in the 2D games the super Mushroom causes Mario to grow large, the fire flower which allows him to throw fire balls and the Star Man which provides him with the ability to get invincible. He could also acquire a wing cap that gave him the ability of flight temporarily. Since 1995, he has been voiced by Charles Martinet. As the Nintendo's mascot Mario is the most famous video game character in the world of video games, and they have already sold about 210 million units making this series the most selling video game series of all time. Other than platform games it has also appeared in other genres including Kart racing series, sports series including Mario Tennis and Mario Golf series including role playing games such as Paper Mario and Super Mario RPG.
He has not only inspired video games, he is also very famous in comics, television shows, films and a line of licensed merchandise. He was created by Shigeru Miyamoto attempting to produce a best selling video game for Nintendo. His previous titles such as Sheriff did not achieve any great success. He wanted to create a game which included the characters Popeye, Bluto and Olive, but he did not get a license to use these characters. And he ended up making Jump man which was later known as Mario. He also created Donkey Kong and Pauline. In the early games he could not jump and the main focus in the game was to make him escape the maze. The Super Mario made his first 3D debut in Super Mario 64. Apart from his plat former and spin off game appearances he also made a guest appearance in non Mario games as well such as Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! In which he played the role of a referee.
It is also a playable character in NBA Street V3 and SSX on Tour both the production of Electronic Arts. He was on fourth on UGO's list of the Top 10 super heroes of all times. Not only talking about the super heroes in Mario even the villain in Donkey Kong was voted 100th in IGN's top 100 villains.
